Protecting Your Home With Security Cameras

We’ve all invested a great deal into our properties. That’s why you want to protect that investment. One of the best ways to do that is with security cameras.

Why Security Cameras?

Security cameras not only protect you home, they give you peace of mind. At any stage, if you’re worried about your property, you can check the cameras to see what’s going on. You can get alerts from most cameras when there is movement. You can then check and see what is going on. If you team up your cameras with an alarm system you can use the cameras to check why an alarm was triggered.

Security cameras provide evidence. Just yesterday we were with a friend who had security cameras on his beach house. The home was part of larger estate and the body corporate are suffering from some infightting. He had footage of another owner snooping around his home. Security footage is also good for providing to police when there is a break in.

Security cameras have multiple uses. I frequently use mine to check on my dog. She’s still a puppy and and need to know she’s okay, not fretting or barking. With dog prices being high at the moment, dog theft is also an issue.

I also use security cameras to watch my front gate. I hate to miss a courier but I also hate jumping up and checking the gate every time there is movement. A quick glance at the cameras and I know what’s going on.

Features Of Security Cameras

These days you can be accessed your security cameras via a smart device. (If they can’t please do not even consider buying such outdated equipment.) It usually takes a couple of seconds for the app to connect, then you’re viewing live streams from your property.

You can also view previous footage by scanning back through the timeline. The better systems will mark “events” on your timeline. These correspond with movement. You can quickly move between events to see what happened.

Many systems these days are also employing a smart time lapse. These time lapses condense time to quickly scan through the days events.

You should also be able to adjust motion sensitivity. These settings come in many flavors. Some are basic, for instance low, medium, high. Others allow you to adjust the size, variance and length of motion detection. Motion detection is used to either alert you to motion and/or record video.

Night vision is available on all but the most basic cameras also. There is a wide variance in the effectiveness of night vision. Some will barely reach a few more than a few body lengths. Others can reach 50-100m.

Following on from that, new technology is making low light vision better. Sometimes called Lightshine or Darkfighter, these technologies deliver considerable better images in that dusk period before night vision kicks in.

And of course we’re entering the age of AI, where the security systems can pick out people, faces and number plates. This technology has filtered down to the domestic level. Affordable systems for home users now incorporate elements of this technology.

Summing Up

I hope that leaves you better informed about making a decision about security cameras. It’s a cheap and effective way to improve the security of your home. Check around for solutions and don’t forget to consult experts.
